From choosing the type of plant, its color, shape, watering needs, etc., there are just so many fun and fascinating ways to start a hanging planter garden in your home. You may only start off with one, but they’re so charming and elegant, you’ll find you’ll want more.  Some of the more popular hangers are made from rope, chains, or even macramé which is making a big comeback. The material of the hanger is just one element. Next, you need to choose the type of container you want. This can range from wood, bamboo, or wicker containers to ceramic, plastic, wire, or even tin paint cans. What’s more – you can decorate your container any way you want to either with paint, adding decorative items such as beads, or carving shapes into it.

Best Plants for Indoor Hanging Planters

When choosing the type of plant you want inside your home, first decide the shape, color, and style you want. Do you want a long, cascading type plant or a more rounded, full-looking plant? The next thing to consider is where your hanger will be placed and whether it is a mostly sunny or mostly shady spot, then you can select the type of plant which will thrive most in those conditions. For mostly sunny spots, plants such as Moss Rose, Lantana, Verbena, and Million Bells are a good bet. For shadier areas, Boston Fern, English Ivy, Impatiens, and Fuchsia plants are a good bet.

Caring for Your Indoor Hanging Planters

Hanging plants can be trickier to care for because they tend to dry out quicker than their counterparts in the ground. A few rules are to make sure your container has drainage holes, water when the topsoil is dry to the touch, and fertilize on a regular basis. Deadheading, trimming, and pruning also help keep your plants looking good.

Or, you can choose any decorative plant you like and simply put it into a hanging planter.
